Expert insight
When you send us a camera, or a box of camera equipment, we appraise every item individually, regardless of its condition, including cameras that are broken or only suitable for spare parts. Many buyers focus only on equipment in excellent working order, but our process is designed to make sure the whole collection is properly assessed, including items where the value may be in the components, lenses, or accessories. For you, that means you receive one clear, comprehensive valuation for everything in your box, in one straightforward step.
What makes an old camera valuable?
Not all old cameras are created equal. Several factors determine whether your camera is worth £50 or £5,000:
- Brand and Model: Certain manufacturers like Leica, Hasselblad, and Nikon hold their value well.
- History: Limited edition models or those with historical significance can command premium prices.
- Condition: Working cameras in excellent cosmetic condition are worth more.
- Parts Value: Even non-working cameras can have value for parts.
- Rarity: Cameras produced in limited quantities or discontinued models are often in high demand among collectors.
- Accessories: Original boxes, manuals, lens caps, and cases can increase value by 20-30%.
Expert insight
We regularly receive professional and premium brands such as Hasselblad, Leica, Arriflex, Nikon, Canon and Sony. Certain types of cameras, particularly Hasselblad medium format cameras, Leica rangefinders and Sony mirrorless cameras sit on the higher end of the market due to their build quality, reputation and long-standing demand among photographers and collectors. Values can vary significantly depending on model, condition, completeness, and current demand, so we assess each item individually rather than relying on fixed price lists.
Understanding the VCC valuation process
Expert insight
- Scanning and logging: Your parcel is scanned into our system to confirm it has arrived safely.
- Initial inspection: We check what has been sent in and assess the general condition.
- Mechanical appraisal: Where relevant, we separate bodies and lenses so each component can be assessed properly.
- Functional testing: We check key functions such as battery compartments, shutters, film wind mechanisms, light meters and electronic controls where applicable.
- Optical inspection: Lenses and viewfinders are also checked for any fungus, haze, scratches, delamination or internal debris.
- Categorisation: Each item is then categorised as Working, Mechanically Working, or Parts / Repairs, depending on what it can realistically be used for.
Market value vs. retail price: what to expect
One of the most common questions we receive is: "Why is my camera not worth what I paid for it?". This is an important conversation to have upfront. Technology advances quickly, making older models obsolete, and the secondary market is often flooded with similar equipment.
Expert insight
Mid-range digital DSLRs are a good example of cameras that have dropped in value over time. While many models were expensive when new, rapid improvements in sensor technology has caused a shift towards mirrorless cameras. As a result, many digital DSLRs that once cost hundreds of pounds, and in some cases over £1,000 when first released, may now sell for a lower amount, depending on age, condition, and whether they include lenses and accessories. However we still accept and value all the DSLRs that we receive.

Types of cameras we buy
We purchase a wide range of camera equipment.
Expert insight
We buy a wide range of camera equipment, including SLRs, rangefinders, medium format and large format cameras, twin lens reflexes, digital compacts, DSLRs, video cameras, cine cameras, and all lenses. We accept almost all cameras and lenses. In general, any APS, 110 or disc film cameras have a very low resale demand as the film for these cameras is no longer manufactured. We focus on established photographic brands and equipment with recognised resale value, rather than modern novelty or toy-style cameras.
Broken or damaged equipment
Many people are surprised to learn that even non-working cameras have value. If your equipment is damaged, you can learn more in our guide to selling broken cameras for parts.
How to prepare your camera for sale
Before sending your camera to us, there are some simple steps to ensure you get the best valuation.
Expert insight
We recommend removing old batteries before posting, as they can leak over time and cause irreparable internal damage. We also recommend formatting any SD cards or other memory cards before sending your cameras to us. If you still have original boxes, manuals, cases, chargers, or lens caps, include them, as accessories can increase the overall value. Avoid attempting to clean internal mirrors, sensors, or lens elements yourself. These parts are delicate, and incorrect cleaning can cause permanent damage.
Camera lenses and accessories
Don't forget about your lenses. Professional lenses from brands like Canon L-series, Nikon gold ring lenses, and Zeiss optics are particularly sought after. For a detailed breakdown of lens valuations, read our camera lens selling guide.
